Town Council approves third referendum budgets totaling $58.9 million

CT EAST HAMPTON — Town Council approves third referendum budgets on 5-1 and 6-0 votes. The Council voted 5-1 to adopt a revised General Government Budget of $19,358,960, with Council Member Ted Hintz, Jr. dissenting, and unanimously approved a Board of Education Budget of $39,550,937, as recommended by the Board of Finance. Town Manager David Cox presented the budgets, which contain education program cuts including elimination of the Smart Start program and middle school sports.
Nine residents spoke during public comment, expressing concerns about the cuts and questioning whether taxpayer savings justified the lost opportunities. The Budget Town Meeting is set for July 29, 2026 at 3:30 p.m., with the referendum ballot on August 5, 2026 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.
